Join Mahoosuc Land Trust for their Habitat for All Fall Festival Presentation on Saturday night, September 28th, at 6pm. Enjoy an evening with “apple explorer” John Bunker. Bunker founded the mail-order nursery Fedco Trees and has worked throughout his life to preserve rare old apple varieties across the New England region.

In his talk, entitled “Black Oxford: The History of an Apple, A County, A State, and the World,” John will discuss the history of this heirloom variety, once a favorite around much of Maine, and its recent return to popularity. A hundred and fifty years ago, there were many thousands of apple varieties being grown across America. Most were locally grown and often unknown even in the next county. Black Oxford was one that originated in Paris, Maine and became popular throughout the central and southern part of the state. From this one apple, we can learn much about the world, the state, the county and even ourselves.
